SM1-Threaded Optical Component Adapters
This page contains all of our Optical Component Thread Adapters that feature SM1 (1.035"-40) threading. Adapters that have both internal and external threads are available, as well as adapters with two sets of internal threads or two sets of external threads.
For use with microscope objectives, we recommend our brass microscope objective threading adapters. They feature a lip to prevent the microscope objective from being threaded too far onto the mount, and their brass construction is harder than aluminum and less likely to bind to and damage the objective threading.
Our SM1 adapters are a subset of our entire line of optical component thread adapters. To view our entire line, please see our Interactive Adapters Selection Guide.

Thermal Insulation Experiment
An experiment was conducted to compare the thermal isolation of our thermally insulating adapters (SM1A4TS, SM1A9TS, SM1A3TS, and SM1A10TS) presented at the bottom of this page with that of our traditional aluminum adapters. During the experiment, an aluminum adapter and a thermally isolating black Delrin®* adapter were each used to connect two lens tubes. Then, one of the lens tubes was externally heated to 60 oC using a foil heating element that had been attached to that lens tube’s outer surface.
During the heating process, simultaneous temperature readings were recorded in 30 second intervals for both the heated and unheated lens tube in each system. The measured results are shown in the plot to the right. From the graph, it is clearly evident that there is far less heat transfer when using one of our thermally isolating adapters to connect two lens tubes than exists when using an aluminum adapter.

(posted 2024-09-30 04:11:36.0) Thank you for reaching out to Thorlabs. While we don’t have an SM1 mount for 1.25" optics, we suggest considering the SM2AD32 (SM2-Threaded Mounting Adapter for Ø32 mm Optics) paired with the SM1A2 Adapter (with external SM1 threads and internal SM2 threads). Although the 32mm internal thread isn’t an exact match for 1.25" (31.75mm) optics, it should still hold, as your optic will be larger than the retaining ring of the SM2AD32. user
(posted 2024-01-11 16:32:52.393) SM1A27 is missing from the table https://www.thorlabs.com/navigation.cfm?guide_id=2327 please add. jdelia
(posted 2024-01-12 10:55:47.0) Thank you for contacting Thorlabs. SM1A27 is in fact not missing from the table you have linked. You just need to click on the blue "i" icon under SM1 external threads and M26 x 0.706 internal threads (thus matching the threads on the SM1A27). Clicking on this will open up a window containing the information and specifications regarding SM1A27. user
(posted 2023-06-12 14:46:50.243) Is the M35 x 0.5 thread (component SM1A57) compatible with M35.5 x 0.5 threads (such as the filter threads on camera lens MVL12M1)? These threads do not appear to be compatible based on the thread spec's, but maybe you know better than I do.
If they are not compatible, it would be helpful to have an M35.5 x 0.5 adapter to SM1 or SM2 threads. Many machine vision camera lenses have M35.5 x 0.5 filter threads (Thorlabs sells some of these lenses), and I would like to adapt this filter thread to SM1 or SM2 threads to connect to other optical systems. jpolaris
(posted 2023-06-15 03:03:44.0) Thank you for contacting Thorlabs. We do not recommend using M35 x 0.5 thread adapters such as SM1A57 on components with M35.5 x 0.5 threads such as those on MVL12M1. While the threads may match for the first few rotations, there would be a risk of damaging both components. Metal shavings may also be left behind if this is attempted. This will be brought up with our design team. Nadir Shah

Nadir YLohia
(posted 2021-03-12 04:02:20.0) Hello Nadir, what thread are you specifically referring to? Internal SM1 or external SM05? The SM1A1 is an adapter -- it is not a single thread type or a tap. Hong-Ruei Chen
 (posted 2021-03-08 23:08:36.607) Hi,
Could you provide the specification of the SM series thread such as the thread pitch, thread angle, and manufacturing tolerance, etc? YLohia
(posted 2021-03-09 11:20:26.0) Hello, please see the "Threading Specs" tab on this page. The tolerances depend on if the threads are Class 2 or Class 3, but are based on the Unified Series Thread Standards. For example, our SM05 external threads are listed as "External Thread, 0.535"-40.0, UNS-2A". The pitch is 40 TPI while the tolerances are governed by the UNS-2A class. The thread angle is 60 degrees for all of our UNS threads (including SM-series threads). YLohia

If so, why on earth don't you say so? You have other adapters labelled as c-mount. It would have saved me a lot of time if you'd mentioned it anywhere! YLohia
(posted 2020-12-15 02:39:48.0) Thank you for contacting Thorlabs. The SM30 thread is specified as M30.5 x 0.5 thread while the C-mount thread is 1.00"-32. Please refer to the Specs tab. These are not the same type and are not cross-compatible. Ray Harwood

(posted 2020-07-29 04:15:33.0) Hello, thank you for contacting Thorlabs. If your retaining ring appears similar to our SM1A3 adapter, then our SPW801 adjustable spanner wrench is our best option for a tool to help remove the retaining ring. 万和 李

(posted 2017-10-18 09:07:31.66) This adapter could be used to mount one 1" or 25mm diameter filter on a Kowa LM50JCM camera but the internal thread is not deep enough (only 3.3mm) for both a filter and a threaded retaining ring, I had to glue the filter to the adapter. A deeper internal thread, 7mm depth (2mm for the ring and 5mm for one or two filters)would be useful for similar applications.
Thanks and best regards.

For example SM1L03 has 7.6mm of thread depth. If you don't want to glue optics in the future, this may be helpful in your application. cafortin

(posted 2014-11-06 01:52:14.0) Response from Jeremy at Thorlabs: SolidWorks do not allow saving for a previous version. However, you should be able to download the STEP file and open that in your current version of SolidWorks. severin.filser
(posted 2013-12-06 11:31:12.82) Dear Sir or Madama,
do you sell adapters to mount a Nikon objective (http://objectives.nikoninstruments.com/compare.php?c[]=81) to a Zeiss LSM 7MP 2-photon-microscope?
Thank you very much,
Severin Filser pbui
(posted 2013-12-12 03:38:51.0) Response from Phong at Thorlabs: The N40X-NIR Nikon objective has M25 x 0.75 external threads while your Zeiss microscope has M27 x 0.75 internal threads. We can manufacture a custom thread adapter for you and will contact you to discuss this further. michaelorger
(posted 2013-10-15 02:40:10.923) I am wondering how easy it would be for you to make an M34x1 (internal) to SM2 (internal or external) adaptor? cdaly
(posted 2013-10-17 14:54:00.0) Response from Chris at Thorlabs: Thank you for your inquiry. We may be able to provide this one for you as a custom. We do already make adapters with use each one of these threads currently. I will contact you directly to discuss this further. user
(posted 2013-09-05 11:16:34.873) It would be useful to have an adapter to convert external SM1 thread to external SM05 thread. cdaly
(posted 2013-09-11 16:02:00.0) Response From Chris at Thorlabs: Thank you for your feedback. Our adapter SM1A1 has internal SM1 threads with external SM05 threads. If you would like to mate two components which have both external SM1 and SM05 threads, the SM1A1 adapter can be used with an SM05T1 to provide the necessary threading. If you would like the adapter to have external threading on both sides in order to mate two internally threaded components, this can be done by using the SM1A1 with the SM1T2 lens tube coupler. tony.hainsworth
(posted 2013-03-07 15:57:28.31) Hi, I am looking for a part similar to the SM1A9, but with both camera and SM1 tube threads external. We have actually had and used two parts just like this but need more now. I am sure we got them bundled with the CMOS cameras we bought from you but I just cannot find this part listed separately.

(posted 2013-03-07 09:54:00.0) Response from Chris at Thorlabs: Thank you for your feedback. We do not have a single adapter which has external threads for both C-Mount and SM1, but if you thread an SM1T2 lens tube coupler into the SM1A9 adapter, you can create the desired adapter. cdaly
(posted 2012-11-27 18:25:00.0) Response from Chris at Thorlabs: Thank you for using our feedback feature. At the moment, we do not currently have M28 thread adapters, but we are always expanding our line of products. I have submitted your request within our internal forums and it will be considered for release by our design engineers. dongyoung.kim
(posted 2012-11-21 20:03:00.523) Do you happen to have M28 to C-mount adopter in the future? I know it is not a common thread (M28), but some ZEISS part use M28 threads and I really need it... Thank you! jlow
(posted 2012-11-06 15:38:00.0) Response from Jeremy at Thorlabs: We do not currently have an adapter for M55 thread. We will get in contact with you directly to discuss about this further. jrestrep
(posted 2012-10-24 16:27:08.64) Hello, this is more of a question. Are there any SM2 external / M55 internal adapters?. Thanks. tcohen
(posted 2012-09-06 15:11:00.0) Response from Tim at Thorlabs: We have been increasing our selection of adapters and as you will notice many of them have been customer inspired. Thank you for providing your feedback as we continue to increase our selection. cafortin
(posted 2012-09-05 15:34:53.0) For future product: External M27x1.0 to Internal SM1. It would be very practical to fit Standa.lt products. bdada

Thank you for your feedback and your interest in our optomechanical adapters. We will consider your request as we continue to expand our selection of adapters.
As an alternative solution, please consider combining the following two products to get an overall effect of external SM05 and RMS threads:
SM05T2 - SM05 (Ø0.535"-40) Coupler, External Threads

(posted 2011-11-28 21:14:07.0) A response from Tyler at Thorlabs: I looked at all the SM1A25 drawing files and they appear to be correct. Can you contact us with more information about the problem that you experienced. As a double check, the design engineer is looking at the files. If they find a mistake it will be fixed and updated on our server by tomorrow morning. Thank you for helping us improve the quality of our website. user

Thank you for your feedback. We will work on improving the clarity of the table so it is easier to determine the different threads and mounts. despinosa
(posted 2011-10-04 10:59:16.0) The table highlights (for determining which style of mount) on this page are a pretty subtle variation in brightness- might make it a little more obvious. jjurado
(posted 2011-08-03 11:41:00.0) Response from Javier at Thorlabs to halvorsen: Thank you very much for your feedback. We will consider the possibility of adding more thread depth to the M25x0.75 side of the SM1A12 adapter. I will contact you directly to discuss your requirements. halvorsen
(posted 2011-08-03 09:25:00.0) Id just like to comment on the SM1A12. It would be nice if you could increase the length of the M25 threading, since Nikon objectives do not seat properly. I have to have the machine shop here modify these, which is a pain. jjurado
(posted 2011-07-08 10:31:00.0) Response from Javier at Thorlabs to ajh: Thank you very much for your feedback! We will look into offering M27x0.5 adapters for use with our C-Mount DCC/DCU cameras and SM1-threaded components.I will contact you directly to keep you updated of the status of this project. ajh
(posted 2011-07-07 16:32:31.0) Please consider adding adapters to this range to cover more of the filter threads used by your C-mount camera lenses, e.g. M27 x 0.5 which is used by a number of the Navitar lenses. Adaptors between these threads and SM1 (at least) would be useful for integrating cameras into lens tube and cage mount based optical systems. Your DCU and DCC cameras are small and light enough to be mounted via the lens in this way, and it can often be convenient to do so. Buki at Thorlabs

(posted 2007-12-19 16:50:53.0) In response to acables request, we have added two links to the couplers page on this page (one in the overview tab and one in the first subgroup). We have also added a link to the couplers page under the related items link. Since the couplers page is quite extensive itself (i.e. 3 subgroups), it did not seem advisable to just add those products to this page, as it would make the page quite long. Thank you for taking the time to help us improve our web pages. We hope that these new links make it easier for you to find the couplers the next time you visit our site. acable
(posted 2007-12-12 10:12:00.0) Please consider having the Lens Tube Couplers added to this page, ive looked for these a couple of time and always come back to this page to look for them. |
