SM1-Threaded Optical Component Adapters

This page contains all of our Optical Component Thread Adapters that feature SM1 (1.035"-40) threading. Adapters that have both internal and external threads are available, as well as adapters with two sets of internal threads or two sets of external threads.

For use with microscope objectives, we recommend our brass microscope objective threading adapters. They feature a lip to prevent the microscope objective from being threaded too far onto the mount, and their brass construction is harder than aluminum and less likely to bind to and damage the objective threading.

Our SM1 adapters are a subset of our entire line of optical component thread adapters. To view our entire line, please see our Interactive Adapters Selection Guide.

Thermal Insulation Experiment

An experiment was conducted to compare the thermal isolation of our thermally insulating adapters (SM1A4TS, SM1A9TS, SM1A3TS, and SM1A10TS) presented at the bottom of this page with that of our traditional aluminum adapters. During the experiment, an aluminum adapter and a thermally isolating black Delrin®* adapter were each used to connect two lens tubes. Then, one of the lens tubes was externally heated to 60 oC using a foil heating element that had been attached to that lens tube’s outer surface.

During the heating process, simultaneous temperature readings were recorded in 30 second intervals for both the heated and unheated lens tube in each system. The measured results are shown in the plot to the right. From the graph, it is clearly evident that there is far less heat transfer when using one of our thermally isolating adapters to connect two lens tubes than exists when using an aluminum adapter.

Threading Specifications

The following is a general overview of screw threading. For more details regarding specifications and dimensions, please consult the Machinery's Handbook, available for purchase at many bookstores.

Features of a Thread
A thread consists of three repeating features: a crest, flank, and root (see drawing to the right). Except in special cases, threads have symmetrical sides inclined at equal angles when a vertical line is drawn through the center of a crest or root. The distance between corresponding points on adjacent threads is known as the pitch of the thread. The flank angle is defined as the angle the flank makes with a perpendicular ray drawn from the screw axis. Unless otherwise stated, threads have a flank angle of 30°, resulting in a total angle between flanks of 60°. Each feature is shown in the diagram to the right.

The major diameter is taken from the crests of a thread while the minor diameter is taken from the roots. For most screws, crests and roots do not terminate at a sharp point, so crest and root truncation values are included in the definitions of major and minor diameter. The pitch diameter is approximately halfway between the major and minor diameters.

Thread Form
A thread form is a set of rules that define the features' scale relative to one another. Common thread forms include the Unified Screw Thread Form, used in the United States of America and measured in imperial units, and the ISO Metric Screw Thread Form, used in many parts of the world and measured with the International System of Units. There are many thread forms in the Unified screw thread standard designated by either UN, which defines a flat root contour, or UNR, which defines a round root contour. These can be further described by appending more letters. For example, an extremely fine thread with a flat root contour is designated UNEF. Those forms which are not standardized by the Unified screw thread system are designated UNS.

Thread Series
Most screws are identified by their thread series. Thread series are denoted by the major diameter and density of threads. Unified threads specify density in threads per inch, while Metric threads specify the thread pitch. For example, in the Unified nomenclature, a 1/4"-20 cap screw has a 1/4" diameter barrel and the pitch is 20 threads per inch (TPI). In metric nomenclature, an M4 x 0.7 cap screw has a 4 mm barrel and the pitch is 1 thread per 0.7 mm. The term M4 x 0.7 is often shortened to just M4.

External 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
  • The tolerance becomes looser as the grade increases. The underlined grades are used with normal lengths of thread engagement.

Thread Class
The tolerances and allowances on a thread series are given by a thread class. Unified thread classes are alphanumeric identifiers starting with a number from 1 through 3, where 1 is the loosest tolerance and 3 is the tightest, and either A for external threading or B for internal threading.

Metric threads have a slightly more complex tolerancing method that uses tolerancing grades, designated by a number 3 through 9; and tolerancing positions, which use letters e through h. Grades provide a measure of the tolerance itself: the smaller the number, the tighter the tolerance. Positions denote the distance of the tolerance from the pitch diameter. Uppercase positioning letters indicate internal threads while lowercase positioning letters indicate external threads.

Quoting from the Machinery's Handbook, 29th Edition, p. 1885: "To designate the tolerance class, the grade and position of the pitch diameter is shown first followed by that for the major diameter in the case of the external thread or that for the minor diameter in the case of the internal thread, thus 4g6g for an external thread and 5H6H for an internal thread. If the two grades and positions are identical, it is not necessary to repeat the symbols, thus 4g, alone, stands for 4g4g and 5H, alone, stands for 5H5H."

Thorlabs' SM Series Threads
Threading specifications for our SM threads, utilized in our lens tube and cage system components, are given below so that you can machine mating components to suit your application. Most SM series threads utilize a non-standard Unified thread form, indicated by the letters UNS, with a 30° flank angle and a thread class of 2A and 2B. The exception is our SM30 series thread, which is a Metric thread form with a 30° flank angle and a tolerance of 6H/6g. We also offer products with C-Mount and RMS threads, and the specifications for these threads are given below for reference. Please note that other manufacturers may have different tolerances for C-Mount and RMS threads. For other thread specifications that are not listed here, please contact Tech Support.

Do you have any 1.25'' Dia mounted adaptor for SM1? Thank you! We bought 27050 U-band bessell 1.25'' Dia Mounted filter from chromic.

Thank you for reaching out to Thorlabs. While we don’t have an SM1 mount for 1.25" optics, we suggest considering the SM2AD32 (SM2-Threaded Mounting Adapter for Ø32 mm Optics) paired with the SM1A2 Adapter (with external SM1 threads and internal SM2 threads). Although the 32mm internal thread isn’t an exact match for 1.25" (31.75mm) optics, it should still hold, as your optic will be larger than the retaining ring of the SM2AD32.

Thank you for contacting Thorlabs. SM1A27 is in fact not missing from the table you have linked. You just need to click on the blue "i" icon under SM1 external threads and M26 x 0.706 internal threads (thus matching the threads on the SM1A27). Clicking on this will open up a window containing the information and specifications regarding SM1A27.

Is the M35 x 0.5 thread (component SM1A57) compatible with M35.5 x 0.5 threads (such as the filter threads on camera lens MVL12M1)? These threads do not appear to be compatible based on the thread spec's, but maybe you know better than I do. If they are not compatible, it would be helpful to have an M35.5 x 0.5 adapter to SM1 or SM2 threads. Many machine vision camera lenses have M35.5 x 0.5 filter threads (Thorlabs sells some of these lenses), and I would like to adapt this filter thread to SM1 or SM2 threads to connect to other optical systems.
jpolaris  (posted 2023-06-15 03:03:44.0)
Thank you for contacting Thorlabs. We do not recommend using M35 x 0.5 thread adapters such as SM1A57 on components with M35.5 x 0.5 threads such as those on MVL12M1. While the threads may match for the first few rotations, there would be a risk of damaging both components. Metal shavings may also be left behind if this is attempted. This will be brought up with our design team.

What is the bore size shall I define for SM1A1 threads, if I want to run the SM1A1 tap. Thanks Nadir
YLohia  (posted 2021-03-12 04:02:20.0)
Hello Nadir, what thread are you specifically referring to? Internal SM1 or external SM05? The SM1A1 is an adapter -- it is not a single thread type or a tap.

Hi, Could you provide the specification of the SM series thread such as the thread pitch, thread angle, and manufacturing tolerance, etc?
YLohia  (posted 2021-03-09 11:20:26.0)
Hello, please see the "Threading Specs" tab on this page. The tolerances depend on if the threads are Class 2 or Class 3, but are based on the Unified Series Thread Standards. For example, our SM05 external threads are listed as "External Thread, 0.535"-40.0, UNS-2A". The pitch is 40 TPI while the tolerances are governed by the UNS-2A class. The thread angle is 60 degrees for all of our UNS threads (including SM-series threads).

Is SM30 = c-mount thread? If so, why on earth don't you say so? You have other adapters labelled as c-mount. It would have saved me a lot of time if you'd mentioned it anywhere!
YLohia  (posted 2020-12-15 02:39:48.0)
Thank you for contacting Thorlabs. The SM30 thread is specified as M30.5 x 0.5 thread while the C-mount thread is 1.00"-32. Please refer to the Specs tab. These are not the same type and are not cross-compatible.

Can you help me? I’ve got a very similar retaining ring on an automotive mirror, being plastic with extremely narrow slots. Nothing I’ve tried will budge the ring. Can you point me to a tool that will fit something like this? At the moment I don’t have the specific diameter of the ring, but if there’s hope, I’ll measure!
llamb  (posted 2020-07-29 04:15:33.0)
Hello, thank you for contacting Thorlabs. If your retaining ring appears similar to our SM1A3 adapter, then our SPW801 adjustable spanner wrench is our best option for a tool to help remove the retaining ring.

The surface of SM1A9 is designed only for hand operation which can adapt to most conditions. But when it is screwed too tightly, we need wrench like SPW502 to help this, while there is no place for SPW502. So I am wondering if you can reconsider this problem.
llamb  (posted 2020-06-15 03:42:32.0)
Thank you for your feedback. We will consider this product suggestion. For the time being, you can also consider our TGP1 soft-jaw pliers to better grip the SM1A9 or your mating parts.

We are interested in mounting RMS-thread objectives to the SM1 system. This almost works for us, but we are not interested in thermal isolation but do care about stability. A similar part made of metal (something along the lines of M32RMSS) would be much better.
YLohia  (posted 2019-06-21 03:20:24.0)
Hello, we offer the SM1A3 on this page, which is made of anodized aluminum and doesn't have any special thermal isolation features.

Hello, thank you for contacting Thorlabs. I will reach out to you directly to discuss the possibility of offering this adapter.

Dear Sir or Madam, I am looking for adapter SM1 female (optical filter mount) to 1.25" male, which is M28.5 x 0.6 1.25" is commonly used in astronomy. Can you make a new catalog part? Best Regards, Vassili
tfrisch  (posted 2018-03-21 04:54:16.0)
Hello, thank you for contacting Thorlabs. Yes, we are able to offer custom thread adapters, but we would need you to provide a mating piece we can use as a part of the inspection and quality control process. I will reach out to you directly about your application.

This adapter could be used to mount one 1" or 25mm diameter filter on a Kowa LM50JCM camera but the internal thread is not deep enough (only 3.3mm) for both a filter and a threaded retaining ring, I had to glue the filter to the adapter. A deeper internal thread, 7mm depth (2mm for the ring and 5mm for one or two filters)would be useful for similar applications. Thanks and best regards. Luciano Olivo Ergolines LAB S.r.l.
tfrisch  (posted 2017-12-06 02:08:11.0)
Hello, Luciano. Thank you for your feedback. SM1A36 (ext M27x0.5 to in SM1) could be used with a short lens tube in order to provide the needed internal thread. For example SM1L03 has 7.6mm of thread depth. If you don't want to glue optics in the future, this may be helpful in your application.

Hi, I would like to adapt line scanning cameras with large 16K sensors for machine vision that use M95x1.0 threads with Thorlabs SM2/SM3 tubing and caging system. Is this in Thorlabs' plan to develop adapters with M95x1.0 threads?
jlow  (posted 2015-11-20 10:08:40.0)
Tyler Morgus: Thank you for the adapter request. Thorlabs can add this adapter to our product line. I will contact you to get the details on the internal/external threading combination that you need. Tyler, Thorlabs Optomechanics Group

Can't open part document (.sldprt) for SM1A39 with SolidWorks version 11.9.0.0. I get a "Cannot Open... Future Version" error message. Other part documents open without problem. Could you please make SM1A39-Solidworks.sldprt compatible with older versions, like almost all other Thorlabs parts? Thanks.
jlow  (posted 2014-11-06 01:52:14.0)
Response from Jeremy at Thorlabs: SolidWorks do not allow saving for a previous version. However, you should be able to download the STEP file and open that in your current version of SolidWorks.

Dear Sir or Madama, do you sell adapters to mount a Nikon objective (http://objectives.nikoninstruments.com/compare.php?c[]=81) to a Zeiss LSM 7MP 2-photon-microscope? Thank you very much, Severin Filser
pbui  (posted 2013-12-12 03:38:51.0)
Response from Phong at Thorlabs: The N40X-NIR Nikon objective has M25 x 0.75 external threads while your Zeiss microscope has M27 x 0.75 internal threads. We can manufacture a custom thread adapter for you and will contact you to discuss this further.
michaelorger  (posted 2013-10-15 02:40:10.923)
I am wondering how easy it would be for you to make an M34x1 (internal) to SM2 (internal or external) adaptor?
cdaly  (posted 2013-10-17 14:54:00.0)
Response from Chris at Thorlabs: Thank you for your inquiry. We may be able to provide this one for you as a custom. We do already make adapters with use each one of these threads currently. I will contact you directly to discuss this further.
user  (posted 2013-09-05 11:16:34.873)
It would be useful to have an adapter to convert external SM1 thread to external SM05 thread.
cdaly  (posted 2013-09-11 16:02:00.0)
Response From Chris at Thorlabs: Thank you for your feedback. Our adapter SM1A1 has internal SM1 threads with external SM05 threads. If you would like to mate two components which have both external SM1 and SM05 threads, the SM1A1 adapter can be used with an SM05T1 to provide the necessary threading. If you would like the adapter to have external threading on both sides in order to mate two internally threaded components, this can be done by using the SM1A1 with the SM1T2 lens tube coupler.

Hi, I am looking for a part similar to the SM1A9, but with both camera and SM1 tube threads external. We have actually had and used two parts just like this but need more now. I am sure we got them bundled with the CMOS cameras we bought from you but I just cannot find this part listed separately. Tony
cdaly  (posted 2013-03-07 09:54:00.0)
Response from Chris at Thorlabs: Thank you for your feedback. We do not have a single adapter which has external threads for both C-Mount and SM1, but if you thread an SM1T2 lens tube coupler into the SM1A9 adapter, you can create the desired adapter.
cdaly  (posted 2012-11-27 18:25:00.0)
Response from Chris at Thorlabs: Thank you for using our feedback feature. At the moment, we do not currently have M28 thread adapters, but we are always expanding our line of products. I have submitted your request within our internal forums and it will be considered for release by our design engineers.
dongyoung.kim  (posted 2012-11-21 20:03:00.523)
Do you happen to have M28 to C-mount adopter in the future? I know it is not a common thread (M28), but some ZEISS part use M28 threads and I really need it... Thank you!

Response from Jeremy at Thorlabs: We do not currently have an adapter for M55 thread. We will get in contact with you directly to discuss about this further.

A response from Tyler at Thorlabs: I looked at all the SM1A25 drawing files and they appear to be correct. Can you contact us with more information about the problem that you experienced. As a double check, the design engineer is looking at the files. If they find a mistake it will be fixed and updated on our server by tomorrow morning. Thank you for helping us improve the quality of our website.

The table highlights (for determining which style of mount) on this page are a pretty subtle variation in brightness- might make it a little more obvious.

Response from Javier at Thorlabs to halvorsen: Thank you very much for your feedback. We will consider the possibility of adding more thread depth to the M25x0.75 side of the SM1A12 adapter. I will contact you directly to discuss your requirements.
halvorsen  (posted 2011-08-03 09:25:00.0)
Id just like to comment on the SM1A12. It would be nice if you could increase the length of the M25 threading, since Nikon objectives do not seat properly. I have to have the machine shop here modify these, which is a pain.
jjurado  (posted 2011-07-08 10:31:00.0)
Response from Javier at Thorlabs to ajh: Thank you very much for your feedback! We will look into offering M27x0.5 adapters for use with our C-Mount DCC/DCU cameras and SM1-threaded components.I will contact you directly to keep you updated of the status of this project.
ajh  (posted 2011-07-07 16:32:31.0)
Please consider adding adapters to this range to cover more of the filter threads used by your C-mount camera lenses, e.g. M27 x 0.5 which is used by a number of the Navitar lenses. Adaptors between these threads and SM1 (at least) would be useful for integrating cameras into lens tube and cage mount based optical systems. Your DCU and DCC cameras are small and light enough to be mounted via the lens in this way, and it can often be convenient to do so.

In response to acables request, we have added two links to the couplers page on this page (one in the overview tab and one in the first subgroup). We have also added a link to the couplers page under the related items link. Since the couplers page is quite extensive itself (i.e. 3 subgroups), it did not seem advisable to just add those products to this page, as it would make the page quite long. Thank you for taking the time to help us improve our web pages. We hope that these new links make it easier for you to find the couplers the next time you visit our site.
acable  (posted 2007-12-12 10:12:00.0)
Please consider having the Lens Tube Couplers added to this page, ive looked for these a couple of time and always come back to this page to look for them.
