Thorlabs' Customizable Enclosure Frames are designed to enable the creation of a custom work environment around Nexus optical tables, ScienceDesk workstations, or other setups that fit within the enclosure frame area. The LFE1220 Wraparound Enclosure is designed to tightly encompass the surface of a 1.2 m x 2.0 m (4' x 6') optical table while not making contact with the table sides in order to minimize vibrations. The LFE1220W Walkway Enclosure Frame is large enough to provide a walkway on all four sides when centered over a 1.2 m x 2.0 m (4' x 6') optical table, although it can be used with other setups that fit inside the frame as well. Both enclosure frames include panels that cover the frame ceiling.
Each enclosure frame can be user-customized by adding Transparent PVC Strip Curtains Kits, a HEPA Fan Filter Unit Kit, Hanging Shelves, or the PSY240E LED Light Strip that are available separately below. Additionally, we offer Acrylic Panel Kits and Laser Safety Panel Kits that are designed for use with the LFE1220 wraparound enclosure frame. The rails that compose these frames are also compatible with our 50 mm & 75 mm construction rail accessories, including T-nuts and screws, mounting brackets and feet, rail joiners, and channel inserts. Users can further customize the frames by adding their own accessories, such as air quality monitors. Alternatively, we also offer Laminar Flow Enclosures based on these enclosure frames that include HEPA filtration, an air quality monitor, LED light strip, and soft wall transparent curtains for situations where a clean room environment is desired.
Please note that these enclosures require assembly, a manual process that requires four people to work on at least one of the assembly steps. Each fully assembled enclosure is designed to enclose a Nexus optical table. Tables are not included and must be purchased separately. The LFE1220W Walkway Enclosure Frame is a free-standing frame with roof panels that also provides a walkway around the optical table. While this enclosure can be used with any table that fits inside, they are specifically designed to work with a 1.2 m x 2.0 m (4' x 6') Nexus Optical Table: the enclosure will encompass 625 mm and 525 mm of walkway space on the short and long sides, respectively, of a 1.2 m x 2.0 m table (see drawing to the lower left).
The frame does not touch the table in order to avoid the transmission of vibrations from the frame to the table. Castors are located at bottom of each leg of the enclosure and provide freedom of movement. Lowering the feet of the enclosure allows it to remain stationary.
The frame is composed of rails that are compatible with our PVC strip curtain, the HEPA Fan Filter Unit Kits, and hanging shelf (sold separately below), as well as 50 mm & 75 mm construction rail accessories, including T-nuts and screws, mounting brackets and feet, rail joiners, and channel inserts. These accessories aid in the creation of a custom work environment surrouding the optical table surface. For lighting, we also offer the PSY240E LED light strip (sold separately below).

These curtain kits add plastic barriers on the sides of our LFE1220 and LFE1220W Frame Enclosures. Each kit incorporates a number of soft wall transparent curtain panels which can be used to shield the fitted side from passing traffic and other interference. When combined with other components, e.g. a HEPA Fan Filter Unit (FFU), these kits can also be used to create a laminar flow environment inside the enclosure. The strips attach to the top rails of the frames using included hardware. Four separate kits are required to completely enclose each frame (two LFELSC8 kits and two LFELSC14 kits for the LFE1220 frame; two LFELSC14 kits and two LFELSC21 kits for the LFE1220W frame). Furthermore, the transparent strip curtain kits can be used with acrylic panel kits, which are sold below, to create an enclosure with up to three solid sides on the LFE1220 wraparound frame.

Thorlabs' LFEPS and LFEPL acrylic panel kits allow a solid-walled enclosure to be fitted to the LFE1220, LFE1220-US, LFE1220-UK, and LFE1220-EU enclosure frames. Each kit comes with one acrylic plastic panel and all of the hardware necessary to mount it; two handles that can be attached to the panel for assistance with positioning during installation are among the included parts. The panel weighs half as much as a glass panel of equal size and has a high resistance to wear, making it suitable for enclosing a variety of different workstation setups.

These HEPA fan filter unit upgrade kits can be mounted on LFE1220 or LFE1220W Enclosure Frames to enable the creation of clean environments. A complete system should include an LFE1220 or LFE1220W enclosure frame, a transparent strip curtain or acrylic panel on each side of the frame, and at least one HEPA fan filter unit. Each kit comes with one (Item # Prefix LFEF1) or two (Item # Prefix LFEF2) fan filter units, as well as the flanges, hex keys, and wrenches necessary for installation. Additionally, the LFEF1 kits come with brackets and handles which make it easier to lift the fan filter units. Each HEPA filter unit has an efficiency of 99.95%, and Thorlabs sells units rated for 115 V or 230 V. Please note that cables are not provided. Assembly and wiring of the filter should be carried out as per local regulations. For more information, please refer to the manual shipped with each kit. Each Laser Safety Panel Kit includes a laser safety fabric panel and all of the hardware needed to mount it to the to the 75 mm rails that make up the LFE1220 Enclosure Frame. Each panel is made from a rubber compound material, which is also used to make Thorlabs' Laser Safety Fabric and Safety Panels for Optical Enclosures. This material is both flame retardant and certified to EN 12254: 2010(E)*. These panels can be mounted to the LFE1220 using the included attachment bar and 2.5 mm hex key. Separate panels can connect via magnetic strips, and six are needed for total coverage of an LFE1220 frame (two LFELP6 panels for each long side and one LFELP7 for each short side). The back of the panels come with straps to hold them open when their coverage is not needed. The front of each laser safety panel includes a document pocket and a card which specifies the part number, manufacture date, and protection levels provided at specific wavelengths. Thorlabs also offers Laser Safety Curtain Systems that can be used to enclose larger spaces.

The LFES1 Hanging Shelf provides additional storage space within our LFE1220 and LFE1220W Enclosure Frames and LFE1220 Series Laminar Flow Enclosures. The shelf panel is slotted to improve airflow for mounted equipment as well as preserve laminar flow within the enclosure. To mount the shelf, the top-bar of the shelf's hanging frame can be connected two adjacent T-slots in the rails that support the enclosure frame's ceiling using the included mounting hardware. The shelf features 403.0 mm of vertical space from the shelf surface to the top of the mounting cross bars, and the height can be adjusted by swapping out the included vertical hanging bars with 25 mm rail extrusions of a different length. For additional shelving space, multiple hanging shelf units can be stacked, as shown in the image to the right.

This rigid LED light strip is 850 mm (33.46") long, comes with a 4.3 m extension cable, and is held in place by three spring clips. It is compatible with the enclosures above and can also be used with racks or shelves, such as our Free-Standing Overhead Shelf or our Nexus Table Frame Overhead Shelves. The strip lights can also be mounted over a bench for general laboratory use.
